What Types of Pests Are Common in the Summer?

24 Jun 2025

The warmer months are a great time to stretch your legs and step outside, and that applies to more than just people. When the sun shines longer and the nights don’t fall below freezing, pests will multiply in numbers and begin to expand their reach.

Before the pests come indoors, take the proactive approach with Brooks Pest Solutions. Our pest control experts work throughout the year to keep your home secure from infestation, so when pests do emerge in the summer, your home will remain healthy and ready for friends and family.

Let’s learn more about why pests come out in the summer, where they go in the winter, and how Brooks Pest Solutions can keep them away every month of the year.

Do Pests Hibernate?

Most pests don’t hibernate in the winter, but they do tend to stay out of sight. Wasps, for example, aren’t seen buzzing around because their colonies die off in the cold, leaving only a few fertilized queens to hide out and survive until spring. Once warmer weather returns, they’ll begin rebuilding, often in wall voids, eaves, or tree hollows near your home.

Other insects and their cousins, like spiders, may actually be more active in the winter, drawn indoors where the air is warm and where other pests to eat are plentiful. Basements, garages, and undisturbed corners of the home give spiders and their prey a quiet place to keep going long after the snow starts falling.

Why Do Ants Come Out in The Summer?

A group of tiny black ant workers bring leaves back to their nest.

Ants may not enter a period of dormancy, but they do slow down when the weather gets cold. As the warm summer air warms them up, they can become more active and focused on expansion.

Just like a construction crew may spend winter months planning and preparing, ants wait out the cold in their nests and burst into action once conditions improve. They’ll start sending scouts further from the colony in search of food and moisture, which is why your kitchen, pantry, or even bathroom becomes a prime target.

Do You See More Roaches in The Summer or Winter?

The important thing to remember about cockroaches is that they are reproductive year-round. Even if you don’t see them during the winter, they’re still active behind the scenes, chewing through cardboard, stashing food scraps, and laying eggs in dark corners of your attic or basement.

This helps explain why, once the weather warms, it may feel like they’ve appeared out of nowhere. In reality, they’ve been multiplying quietly all winter long, and summer just makes it easier for them to move freely and come out into the open.

What Are Cicada Broods?

These are a special type of summertime pest that can really raise a racket.

If you’ve never seen a cicada, you’ve almost certainly heard them. Their high-pitched, droning buzz can fill entire neighborhoods, especially during the hottest parts of the day. With stalky bodies, big transparent wings, and bulging eyes, cicadas may look intimidating, but they don’t bite or sting.

While a few show up every summer, Cicada broods spend most of their lives underground, sometimes for 13 or 17 years, feeding on the roots of trees and plants before emerging all at once to molt, mate, and make a lot of noise.

Brood XIV is expected to emerge this year, so keep your eyes and ears out.

Other Common Summer Insects

Summer is the most common season to find pests, no matter the type, so keep an eye out around your home to spot them before they become a problem:

  • Mosquitoes. Look for them near standing water in buckets, gutters, or backyard planters.
  • Flies. They often gather around trash cans, fruit bowls, and pet food.
  • Earwigs. These stealthy pests sneak into damp areas like bathrooms, basements, and under sinks.
